Chalky Color Love

Chalky pastels are making me happy this week.

I don't know if it is the endless daze of gray here in the mountains or the hint that spring is right around the corner, but I am craving some warm, dry and dusty.

These colours remind me of long, warm, summer nights. They remind me of the desert. They remind me that summer is in my future. Most importantly though they satisfy the need for a little colour in my life.

Finding my own inspiration from above -  a little visit to the desert on my desk today. Paper cut pieces randomly scattered and then played with like pieces of a puzzle until I find a composition I am happy with.

More pieces of my painted papers - colours, textures and shapes I was drawn to. Nothing solid, or glued down yet, but the ideas are there.

Eventually it will all come together. I love the randomness of it all and the life it has before being glued down.

I often prefer it this way!

I have to say I am quite happy being back here blogging. I really enjoy sharing the creative process, both mine and others. You just never know how and where inspiration will strike.

If you are interested in bi-monthly updates please sign up for my newsletter below. I am hoping to blog twice a week and offer free downloads and other fun and creative info.

Enjoy the week!

Hello Hello!

I am back!

After one whole year of dreaming and scheming about my creative life, it is my pleasure to introduce you to my brand new, shiny website!

Once again, my main feature will be my blog and portfolio, but as you can see above....I have also added a shop! My very own storefront!

Julie Hamilton Creative

It is looking pretty empty right now, but not for long. I have all sorts of plans to fill it with happy and colourful new art for you.

A big shout out and thank you to Erin and LiveBig who gently guided me through the growing pains and helped point me in the right direction. Only a good friend could have stood by me through numerous art therapy discussions about who I really am as an artist. As you will discover, I still haven't narrowed it down. My portfolio runneth over...

I like to do it all! I have decided That is who I am. There is no going back!

Julie Hamilton Creative

My hope is to once again provide creative inspiration to you here on the Blog. I love the creative process, all of the  play and possibility. I will continue to share with you my favourite classes, new techniques, different mediums and inspiration.

I have also started a new series on Instagram called #Sketchbook_Studies. Pop by and have a look here. I have been sharing my process pictures, but it will be nice to have a home here to discuss it.

PaperDaisy fabric at Modern Yardage!

One more day to go! Voting ends tonight for Martha Stewarts AmericanMade Contest. Modern Yardage is in the final 6 and really hoping for a win. I can't even begin to describe how fantastic that would be. modern yardage Thank you all so much for your support during this process. It's difficult to constantly ask and remind everyone  to vote and support you. Thank you to all those who have retweeted , shared our facebook page and voted. Lots of good karma is coming your way! (If you want one more chance, here is the link to vote:) My second fabric collection was just released a few weeks ago. September is crazy around here with the start of school and work so I never really had a chance to blog about it. It's fun, fresh and perfect for the girly teen crowd! julie hamilton designs for Modern Yardage julie hamilton designs for Modern Yardage The PaperDaisy collection ~ available in lots of different sizes and colors. Sewists and crafters are loving the versatility of all the different sizes and colorways. julie hamilton designs for Modern Yardage I can envision this design on many things. Dresses, duvets, summer place mats and napkins or perhaps some fun cushion covers.  I am going to cover my daughters corkboard/inspiration board with it. It's no fun looking at cork so I thought this would be a fun way to dress her board up to match her room. julie hamilton designs for Modern Yardage I am slowly putting together a Pinterest board of fabric crafts and projects that only require ONE yard of fabric. Here it is here!  There is so much beautiful fabric out there that inspires me. I still find big sewing projects daunting so thought this would be a great way to start~ small.  This is my way of keeping it simple. I am often asked where my inspiration for my pattern designs comes from. This one was easy - doodling and papercutting. Paperdaisy Inspiration~ it all began with a simple sketch and an exacto knife. No digits were harmed in the process. julie hamilton designs {artistically afflicted blog}
I scanned the papercut art into my computer, separated and cleaned up the motifs and then started the patterning process. I still have lots more motifs to play with. For more info on this and many other beautiful, modern fabrics have a visit with us at Modern Yardage. All of my fabrics can be found here.
Once again, thanks for your support. Please keep your fingers crossed for us Tuesday October 1st!

Inspired by Papercut Art

I am happy to announce that my large-scale papercut art is almost done! 19" by 25". I am really happy with it. I can see myself using alot of the shapes and patterns in my surface patterns. That's next weeks post:) artistically afflicted blog, surface pattern designI am still undecided on my finishing touches. There is quite a bit of detailed cutting I can do.I am debating whether to leave the birds as white space or more detailed. I am also considering leaving more white space around the edges.I think I will for now until I decide how to frame this. I quite like the white space leading into the intricate cuts. artistically afflicted blog, julie hamilton I have found this great new paper by  Canson Studio called Mi- Tientes Touch. It's beautifully textured pastel paper and comes in a great palette of colors, perfect for placing behind  papercut art.

My next step is to find a unique way to frame or display this. I am going to have to protect the paper so thinking a plexiglass type box. However, I would also like it to be very organic, so thinking wood and airplane wire. Hmmm...a visit to Pinterest may be in order. I know I will find some inspiration there. Any suggestions? Thank you for all your kind words and encouragement on Facebook when I posted this on my page. I always appreciate the support and encouragement I find there. March break begins today.Yay! We woke up to 30 com of snow yesterday! Just when you think it's the beginning of the end, it all starts again.Whistler is hopping! Enjoy your weekend!
