THE 100 DAY PROJECT 2024
It amazes me to think that I am in my 9th year of this yearly project. What started out as 100 days of paper cut illustrations has morphed into a life of its own. (I remember a few sleepless nights back then just trying to get it done…AND to look good so I could post it) Well, things have changed on that front ->Now it’s all about slow, thoughtful work. You can check out my Story Highlights for my progress or right here in my journal. I am planning to share a little bit about my thought process during this project.
This years project is based around colour, shape and the interaction of pieces. It’s a loose idea, but it gives me a certain amount of wiggle room to let the ideas flow and see where and what they arrive upon.
I am using my previous projects to work as a jumping off point because I liked their direction - painterly marks, collage and lots of experimentation. Over the years I have changed, and my art has definitely changed, so the goal is to bring them forward to feel more like Me.
I have spent the first two weeks of the project concentrating on color mixing and painting. I have been adhering my painterly pieces to Mat board and cutting shapes out of them. I have been attaching pieces together and playing with their layout and interaction. I have been finding the common thread between previous work and now. It still feels very much like me.
A lot of paper shuffling going on around here. I am auditioning all of the pieces with one another, observing what resonates with me and what does not.
I do know that I am liking this direction - I don’t know how I am going to make them transition from one to another. I almost feel like I want them to be a bit more dimensional, but…a Big but…I don’t know how I am going to get there.
Time will tell.
For now I just want to enjoy the process of playing around with composition. I always enjoy this stage of What If?
Nothing is permanent until it’s all glued down so it’s a perfect opportunity to just have at it.
One thing leads to another -> Snapping photos along the way to see how each stands alone and to remember some of their placements. It’s also a great reminder to crop and see if they can say more with less. I have to improve upon my discernment and this is an excellent way to do it.
That’s all for now! I have a Zine tutorial coming up later next week so please pop by for a visit. I will send a newsletter out so please sign up if you are new here. Thanks so much!
Keep Easy,
Julie
