THE TWISTS AND FOLDS OF A ZINE
Zine: Short for magazine. Typically they are produced in small batches and self published - poetry, fiction, fashion, art, They represent stories being told by the creator. Historically, they were a sign of the times and a hard copy reminder of cultural fads at that time.
No rules to the how and why…just plain fun.
“Zinesters” are generally creative types motivated by self-expression and artistic passion versus profit. Lol…ummm, that would be Me. I have made 8 of these to date and I see more in my future.
I can make these all day long and I can promise you I will not be selling them. (I do think that they would look very cool professionally printed though and in this small size format! Just throwing that thought out there…
I created my original Master Sheet with various collage papers all in a cohesive colour. Size 11” x 14” on 80 lb Sketchbook paper. I do not have a tutorial ready for the making of the art quite yet, but I promise I am thinking about it.
TOP TIP: For starters start with neutral papers all layered. I used some transparent tissue on top as well. The shapes were then cut out and collaged on top. I tried to overlap some and also tried to make them all different.Value contrast was on my mind. My rule of thumb is start big and general and then add smaller details. You can even add the details after the folding.
This original master sheet could be created in paint and/or other mixed media material. Please make sure to seal any water soluble or messy marks as it is a book and will be sure to draw lots of attention and page turning.
I included these two photos because it is often where I get mixed up. The trick is the “pinch the diamond” together. You can then play with your page options.
I love all the ideas that are generated by the simple folding of these. Shapes and little pieces in unexpected places. A reminder to always pay attention to the edges of your Art.
The beauty of these is that there are always parts that you love so take those parts (colors, shapes etc..) and apply them to your other pages that you may not love as much. Think of it as a mini series.
I hope that is enough to get started on your way into the world of Zines. So much possibility and so much inspiration with these little ones.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Keep easy,
Julie
